2005 Little Fifty Scholarships

 

The following scholarship was made possible through the generosity of Jim "Lefty" Bruce. “Lefty” was a Little 500 rider for Kappa Sigma in 1953 and received his degree in marketing from the Business School at Indiana University, as well as participating in the ROTC program. He currently lives in Fallbrook, California near San Diego, with his wife Mary. We would like to honor and thank “Lefty” for his many financial contributions to the Little Fifty and Indiana University, but also thank him for his enthusiasm and motivation to make the Little Fifty running race extraordinary.

Jim Bruce Improvement Award
This award is a scholarship for the team who improved most from their qualification time to their actual finish time during the race. The women’s recipient is I-Run U-Run and the men’s recipient is The Grandpappy's.

This year's recipients of this $250 scholarship are Mark Bland and Lacey Voland.

2003 Little Fifty Scholarships

Little Fifty Spirit Scholarship
This $250 scholarship is awarded to the male and female runners who best exemplify the spirit of working to help others throughout all Little Fifty events and practices. The women’s recipient is Kristin Egan running for team Hot Buns and the men’s recipient is Stan Regan running for team Alpha Tau Omega

Unsung Runner Scholarship
This $250 scholarship is awarded to a male and female runner who is nominated by another runner participating in the Little Fifty. The recipients embody hard work, dedication, teamwork, and a love of the Little Fifty, but whose efforts largely go unnoticed by others. The first was nominated by Jean Buckel. This individual “has graciously become our alternate and subsequently the motivator and cheerleader for Half Fast. Her enthusiasm and ability to help where ever she is needed definetly has set her apart. We would like to congratulate Rebecca Taylor from Half Fast. Our second recipient was nominated by Colleen Whelihan. “is not only a great student but also is one who participates in many extracurricular activities and volunteerism many activities that involve hard work. Since transferring to IU during her sophomore ear, she has made a great impact on me and other’s people’s lives. We would like to congratulate Elizabeth Munn from Hot Buns.

Working Runner Scholarship
This $250 scholarship is awarded to a female and male runner based upon GPA and number of hours worked to help financially support their education. The women’s recipient is Katie Calaway running for team Phi Mu and the men’s recipient is Sean Faris running for team Delta Kappa Epsilon.

Little Fifty Participation Award
This $250 scholarship is awarded to the female and male runners who best exemplify leadership, enthusiasm, strength of character, and involvement in the Little Fifty Running Race. The women’s recipient is Colleen Whelihan running for team Hot Buns and the men’s recipient is Samuel Locke running for team Alpha Sigma Phi.

Runners Council Award
This $500 scholarship is awarded to a member of the Runners Council that displayed outstanding leadership while contributing to the successful running of the Inaugural Little Fifty Running Race. This years recipient is a member of team Alpha Phi, Megan Anderson.

This award is a scholarship for the team who improved most from their qualification time to their actual finish time during the race. The women’s recipient is I-Run U-Run and the men’s recipient is Army.

The following scholarship was provided by the Ackerman family in memory of the son, Joey.

Joey Ackerman Little Fifty Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a male or female participant who has exceptional athletic talent, willingness to work hard to excel, determination, camaraderie with his competitors, compatibility and friendly on a deeper level all while taking their studies very seriously. The recipient this year is Kevin Cane running for team Delta Kappa Epsilon.
